Best Months to Hunt Red Stag

Two red deer stags in winter forest with snow

Even though they look a lot alike, red deer (Cervus elaphus) are the fourth most significant type of deer. They are often mistaken for elk because they look so much alike. The giant animals worldwide are moose, elk, and sambar deer. Antlers are only on male Red Deer, also called Stags or Harts. They start to grow new ones in the spring, not long after they shed the old ones. The females are called hinds. You can hunt red deer all year long in Texas. Stags are usually only killed when their antlers are hard, between September and March. Hinds, on the other hand, can be killed at any time of the year.

We have the most significant number of Trophy Red Stag Deer in any place in the United States, and our prices are the best. We offer deer hunts in Texas for Big Trophy Red Stags from the beginning of August to the end of February. Since Texas has no season restrictions for hunting Red Deer, we suggest you visit us in July or August to see a Red Stag in Velvet. If you wait until September 1, all of our Big Red Stags will have been hard-antlered. While hunting Trophy Red Deer, we usually let our shooters choose the method that makes them feel most at ease. Trophy Red Stag shooters can choose to hunt with a bow, a rifle, black powder, a handgun, or from a blind.

Hunters of any age or skill level are welcome, as are hunters who can’t move around or use a wheelchair. We now have a lot of Red Stags on our ranch, from Bronze Medal Stags to Gold Medal Red Stags with and without beautiful crowns. Before we find your Trophy Red Stag, you should expect to see a lot of Red Stags that look like those in New Zealand. August through February are when our Red Stag hunts happen all year. You can hunt a Trophy Red Stag at Squaw Mountain Ranch for less than the price of a round-trip foreign plane ticket from California. This Red Stag will be bigger than the ones you shoot in Europe and about the same size as those in New Zealand.

Things You Should Know About the Red Stag

Size and Weight of Deer

Their height is between 107 and 137 cm, and their weight is between 90 and 190 kg. Hinds, which are females, are between 107 and 122 centimetres tall and weigh between 63 and 120 kilograms.

The Color of the Coat

They are called red deer because of the beautiful fur that covers them. The only thing that sets them apart is a different shade of red. That is, each one has a different shade of the same color. They have a very dark red coat that looks a lot like the coat of a Caribou deer in some parts of the world. A lot of the time, their coat changes color and looks grayer in the winter. Because of this, many people think this breed is a different species. They have a better chance of fitting in with their surroundings year-round because they change their appearance.

Antlers

A red stag deer’s antlers are beautiful, and they have an average of six points. They can have up to 15 points, though, which means they are entirely in charge. For the same reason, their horns cover a lot of ground as they spread out. Because these antlers are so unique, that is one of the main reasons people look for them when they hunt. Elk and white-tailed deer both have antlers that are about the same size.

What Does a Red Deer Eat?

Red stag deer mostly eat grass because it is easy to get to. In the same way that other deer do, they eat mostly tree bark, bushes, leaves, sedges, grasses, and rushes. You can also find hawkweed, grass, dandelions, and mushrooms. They spit up their food and then eat it again, which is an interesting fact about food.

Biology

For most of the year, the stags and hinds like to stay in separate groups. The stags will gather in the “bachelor herd,” and the hinds will gather in groups led by a dominant hind and her children. In a 24-hour time, they are busiest in the evening, which could be because there are not many people around. Stags and hinds will likely mate during the rut between late September and November. Much time and energy will likely be spent by mature stags competing with others to mate with the hinds. Stags usually test each other’s skills by walking next to each other and roaring, but they do not get violent.

Stags whose antlers are all the same size and shape can lock and push each other. This is done to make the other one feel uneasy. They sometimes even twist the arm of the other. Because of this, serious physical harm or, in some cases, death can happen. After the rut, the stag and the hind give birth to a single fawn, which rarely happens. This could occur between the end of May and the beginning of June. Male calves are released into the wild when one or two years old, but female calves stay with their mothers.

Predators

The wolf is one of the most dangerous animals to red stag deer in the wild. However, the number of wolves in some areas is steadily going down, which has caused the overall population to rise. Still, the fact that they are being brought back into different regions affects the population of their species. A lot of people have said they do not like this. Still, scientists think bringing wolves back will help get the population back into balance. This is because there is enough space for both species to survive.
